Job: Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Maine

The University of Maine’s Department of Philosophy seeks a dynamic, innovative teacher to join our small, collegial, pluralistic department at Maine’s flagship land and sea grant institution. We invite applicants for an ongoing academic-year lecturer position anticipated to start August 29, 2022.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

This position has a 4/4 teaching load and no research expectations. The position’s teaching focus is significantly ethics-related but will also ideally include a broad range of philosophy courses for majors and non-majors. The successful candidate will also teach multiple sections of a 1-credit graduate-level research ethics course. Desired additional courses for this position include introduction to religious studies, classical Indian philosophy, Medieval and Renaissance philosophy, the history of Modern philosophy, and/or methods of reasoning. In addition to ordinary expectations for campus service, there is also a required service component for the position—namely, serving as the coordinator of UMaine’s minors in both religious studies and Judaic studies. The department therefore desires a candidate who shows evidence of having previously coordinated an academic program at some level. We also prefer candidates who show evidence of shaping their teaching pedagogy and/or materials to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in philosophy.About the University:

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or Religious Studies required by date of hire
  • Teaching expertise in ethics (including evidence of ability to teach courses such as ethics, contemporary moral problems, and research ethics)
  • Evidence of ability to teach one or more of the following courses: introduction to religious studies, classical Indian philosophy, Medieval and Renaissance philosophy, history of Modern philosophy, methods of reasoning
  • Evidence of ability to teach successful courses at the undergraduate level
  • Effective oral and written communication skills


  • Experience coordinating an academic program
  • Evidence of shaping teaching pedagogy and/or materials to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in philosophy
  • A record of success in developing donor or community relationships.
